MENSTRUATING GODDESS- KAMAKHYA

Kamakhya Temple, located on the Neelachal Hills in Guwahati, Assam, is one of the oldest and most revered centers of Tantric practices, dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. The temple is the center of the Kulachar Tantra route and the site of the Ambubachi Mela, an annual festival that celebrates the goddess's menstrual cycle. Structurally, the temple dates to the 8th–9th century and underwent several subsequent reconstructions – and the final mixed architecture defining a local style called Nilachal. It is one of the oldest 4 Peethas out of the 51 Peethas of the Shakta tradition. An obscure place of worship for much of its history, it became an important pilgrimage site during colonial rule in the 19th century, especially for the people of Bengal. Originally an autonomous place of worship of a local goddess where the primary worship of an aniconic yoni set in natural stone continues even today, the Kamakya temple became identified with state power when the Mlechchha dynasty of Kamarupa first patronized it, then Palas, Koch and Ahom. The Kalika Purana, written during the Pala rule, links Naraka, the legitimate ancestor of the Kamarupa kings, with the goddess Kamakhya, representing the region and the Kamarupa kingdom. The form of Goddess Kamakhya who undergoes menstruation every year. This form of the Goddess clarifies the importance of the female element. From this form of the Goddess we learn that menstruation is not a sin, not a crime... and it is not even shameful... It is just a natural process.
